The Westmoreland County commissioners have approved a $1.7 million tourism plan for 2025, with a strong emphasis on enhancing the county’s 12-park system.
Funded by 40% of the county’s 5% hotel tax, the plan prioritizes park refurbishments, maintenance, and safety improvements, aligning with local government efforts to bolster tourism and community engagement.
Key projects include a $970,174 investment for general park enhancements, such as renovating the lower lake gazebo at Twin Lakes Park, resurfacing roads and parking lots, and replacing aging playground equipment and pedal boats.
An additional $81,440 will fund safety upgrades, new shade trees, picnic areas, ballfield repairs, and new climbing areas at Twin Lakes and Northmoreland Parks.
Signature events and festivals are also supported in the plan. The Westmoreland Arts & Heritage Festival, held over the July 4th weekend at Twin Lakes Park, received $165,000 for operations, while nearly $94,000 was allocated for a scaled-down, one-day air show at Arnold Palmer Regional Airport. Funds will also support county-wide marketing campaigns to attract visitors.
Commissioner Sean Kertes described the parks as “hidden gems” deserving reinvestment to benefit residents and visitors. Commissioner Ted Kopas highlighted the role of tourism dollars in supplementing property tax revenue, enabling these investments.
Approximately 60% of the hotel tax revenue is allocated to Go Laurel Highlands, a regional tourism agency promoting attractions in Westmoreland, Fayette, and Somerset counties. The remaining funds are managed by the county for its tourism initiatives, including a recent $548,000 grant distribution to 47 local businesses and organizations.
